FIFA World Cup

Also Known As The World Cup

Team and Ball-Sport World Cups

The FIFA World Cup is the premier international association football tournament, contested by national teams. It was first held in 1930 in Uruguay, organized by FIFA, which had itself been founded in 1904, and the host nation Uruguay, also the reigning Olympic football champion, won the inaugural tournament. The tournament has been held every four years since, with the sole exception of a wartime suspension: no tournaments were held in 1942 or 1946 because of the Second World War. The finals field has expanded repeatedly: thirteen teams competed in the 1930 tournament, the field settled at sixteen from 1934 through 1978 (with a wartime gap), FIFA expanded it to twenty-four for the 1982 tournament, to thirty-two for 1998, and to forty-eight teams for the 2026 tournament, the first World Cup jointly hosted by three nations, the United States, Mexico and Canada.

From Thirteen Teams to a Global Institution: How the World Cup Grew

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

The first World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930, drew just thirteen teams, and getting even that many to South America was its own achievement. Several European federations initially declined to send teams at all, citing the several weeks a transatlantic sea voyage would cost their players; only four European sides ultimately made the crossing. The tournament's format grew only gradually afterward: sixteen teams became the standard field for most of the twentieth century, expanding to twenty four in 1982 and to thirty two in 1998, a size the tournament held for nearly three decades.

Television transformed the tournament's reach long before its bracket grew. The 1966 tournament in England was the first broadcast internationally by satellite, and color broadcasts followed at the 1970 tournament in Mexico, reaching audiences far beyond the stadiums for the first time. Commercial sponsorship and broadcast rights fees grew alongside that audience, turning a tournament that paid its 1930 participants nothing beyond travel expenses into one of the most heavily commercialized events in world sport.

The most recent expansion arrived at the 2026 tournament, co-hosted for the first time by three nations, the United States, Canada and Mexico, and enlarged to forty eight teams, the tournament's largest field yet and its first structural change to the format since 1998.

Contested Hosts: The World Cup's Hardest Choices

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Hosting the World Cup has repeatedly placed the tournament in the middle of its host nation's politics, not beside it. Italy's 1934 tournament was staged under Benito Mussolini's fascist government, which pressed the tournament into service as a demonstration of national strength, and historians still debate whether refereeing decisions in Italy's run to the title were influenced by that pressure. Argentina's 1978 tournament was hosted by a military junta in the midst of the Dirty War, the campaign of forced disappearances and killings the regime carried out against its own citizens, while presenting the tournament abroad as evidence of a stable, modern nation.

FIFA's own governance became the story ahead of the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. A 2015 United States Department of Justice indictment charged more than a dozen FIFA and confederation officials with decades of bribery and kickbacks, including allegations reaching directly into the voting process that awarded Russia the 2018 tournament and Qatar the 2022 tournament. Qatar's hosting brought its own sustained criticism: human rights organizations documented deaths and abusive conditions among the largely South Asian migrant workforce that built the tournament's stadiums, and the tournament itself was moved to November and December, the first time it was not played in its traditional June and July window, to avoid Qatar's summer heat. FIFA and Qatari organizers defended the tournament as a catalyst for labor reforms already underway; rights groups countered that the reforms arrived too late for many of the workers whose deaths had prompted them.
