Franz Beckenbauer was a German footballer and later manager widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in the sport's history, credited with pioneering the modern attacking sweeper role known in Germany as the libero. As a player he won the 1974 World Cup as captain of West Germany and multiple European Cups with Bayern Munich, and he later became one of only a small number of people to win the World Cup as both a player and a head coach, managing West Germany to the title in 1990. He was also a leading organizer of Germany's hosting of the 2006 World Cup.
