The World Cup Grew By Redesigning Itself, Not By Repeating Itself

It is easy to read the FIFA World Cup as one fixed contest, played every four years since 1930 in the same shape it always had. The record shows something closer to a tournament that kept redesigning itself to keep up with a game that kept growing. The finals field itself has been resized four separate times: thirteen teams competed in the first tournament in Uruguay in 1930, the field settled at sixteen from 1934 through 1978 with a wartime gap, FIFA expanded it to twenty four for the 1982 tournament, to thirty two for 1998, and to forty eight teams for 2026. Each expansion was a deliberate answer to a football world that had outgrown the previous field size, not a fixed rule applied unchanged. The hosting arrangement was redesigned the same way. For nearly a century a World Cup meant one host nation; Mexico became the only country to host it twice, in 1970 and 1986, still within that one-host model. The 2026 tournament breaks that model entirely: it will be the first World Cup jointly hosted by three nations, the United States, Mexico and Canada, at once. The only period the organizers did not redesign around growth was wartime: no tournament was held in 1942 or 1946 because of the Second World War, the sole interruption in an otherwise continuous run since 1930. A trophy that looks unchanged from the outside has in fact been rebuilt in size and structure every time the game underneath it got too big for the previous version.
