Leonel Guillermo Sanchez Lineros was a Chilean professional footballer who played as a striker or on the left wing. He was born on 25 April 1936 and died on 2 April 2022. He is recognized as one of the best South American footballers of the twentieth century and was the top goalscorer of the 1962 FIFA World Cup, at which Chile finished third, winning the Golden Boot and the Bronze Ball and earning a place in the team of the tournament. He was a leader of the Universidad de Chile side of the Blue Ballet era from 1959 to 1969 and one of that club's great idols. For the Chile national team he is the seventh all-time top scorer with 24 goals, and he took part in the infamous 1962 match against Italy. Conmebol counts him among the best free kick specialists in South American history.
