The 1992 Summer Olympics were held in Barcelona, Spain, the first Games held after the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, whose former republics competed together as a Unified Team. South Africa returned to the Olympics for the first time since 1960 following the end of apartheid. The United States men's basketball team, the Dream Team, featuring NBA professionals for the first time, dominated the tournament and is widely regarded as one of the greatest teams ever assembled in any sport.
