The International Hockey Federation (FIH), the sport's global governing body, was founded on 7 January 1924 in Paris by Paul Leautey, who became its first president, in direct response to field hockey's own omission from that year's Olympic programme; the seven founding members were Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Hungary, Spain and Switzerland. Stick-and-ball games have independent older traditions in many regions; the modern rules and international competition structure date to this 1924 founding.

The sport is known simply as hockey in many countries. In Sweden and Finland, the term landhockey and maahockey respectively are used, translating to 'ground' hockey in opposition to the more standard ice hockey variant.
