The 1968 Summer Olympics were held in Mexico City, Mexico, the first Games held in Latin America and at high altitude, conditions that contributed to a wave of record-breaking performances in explosive events, including Bob Beamon's long jump world record that stood for 23 years. The Games are also remembered for the Black Power salute given by American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos on the medal podium during the 200 meters ceremony, a protest against racial injustice that led to their expulsion from the Games.
