Canoeing

Water and Boat Sports

Canoeing is a paddle sport contested in canoes and kayaks, with Olympic competition split between sprint racing on flat water and slalom racing through a course of gates on white water. It has been part of the Summer Olympics since 1936 and is governed internationally by the International Canoe Federation. The sport grew out of traditional canoe and kayak designs used by indigenous peoples in North America and the Arctic before being adapted for organized racing in Europe in the 19th century.
