Jim Hines

Track and Field Disciplines

Jim Hines (1946 to 2023) was an American track and field athlete and National Football League player who held the 100 metre world record for 15 years. In 1968 he became the first man to officially break the 10 second barrier in the 100 metres, and at the Mexico City Olympics that year he won gold in both the individual 100 metres and the relay. The record he set that year remained the 100 metre world record for 15 years. Alongside his athletics career he is also recorded as a player in the National Football League, which makes him one of the athletes in this atlas who worked in two different sports. He was born in 1946 and died in June 2023.
