Karin Krebs

Karin Krebs, born Karin Burneleit on 18 August 1943, is a retired German middle-distance runner who represented East Germany. She won the 800 metres at the 1968 European Indoor Games but failed to reach the 800 metre Olympic final that year, then concentrated on the 1500 metres and won it at the 1971 European Championships, setting a world record of 4:09.6 minutes. She placed fourth at the 1972 Olympics, and her world record was broken that July by Lyudmila Bragina, later the Olympic gold medallist. Her last major success was a silver medal over 1500 metres at the 1974 European Indoor Championships. Domestically she won the East German 800 metre outdoor title in 1968 and indoor titles in 1966 and 1968, plus the 1500 metre indoor title in 1971 and 1974. She married the long-distance runner Joachim Krebs after the 1972 Olympics, and their daughter Nadja also became a runner.
