The National Collegiate Athletic Association is a nonprofit organization that regulates student athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States and one in Canada, and it organizes athletic programs and championships for more than 500,000 college athletes. Its headquarters is in Indianapolis, Indiana. Since 1973 its members have been sorted into Divisions I, II and III, with only the first two allowed to offer athletic scholarships. The association runs the national championships in many sports, including the Division I men's and women's lacrosse tournaments, and it is also known for its restrictions on athlete pay and for the legal challenges to them.
