Roberto Balado Méndez was a Cuban amateur boxer, born on 15 February 1969 and died in a car accident on 2 July 1994, who competed from 1986 to 1994. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona he won the gold medal in the men's super heavyweight division, over 91 kg, and he also won the Val Barker Trophy for outstanding boxer of those Games. A natural heavyweight, he was three times world champion, in Moscow in 1989, Sydney in 1991 and Tampere in 1993, and five times Cuban national champion. By the time of his death at age 25 he had fought 250 times, with 238 victories and 12 losses, and some boxing experts considered him the second best fighter in the world after Félix Savón.
