Modern team handball rules were first published on 29 October 1917 in Berlin by German sports teachers Max Heiser, Karl Schelenz and Erich Konigh, initially for women's teams; Schelenz adapted the rules for men in 1919, and the first international matches followed in the 1920s. The sport's international governing body was first formed in 1928 as the Federation Internationale Handball Amateur and took its current name, International Handball Federation, at a founding congress in Copenhagen on 10 to 13 July 1946.
