2004 Summer Olympics

Multi-Sport Games

The 2004 Summer Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, returning the Games to the country where the modern Olympics began in 1896. The shot put event was held at the ancient stadium at Olympia, the site of the ancient Olympic Games, as a symbolic link between the ancient and modern traditions. Significant cost overruns and security concerns, heightened after the September 11 attacks three years earlier, made the Athens Games among the most expensive to that point.
