2000 Summer Olympics

Multi-Sport Games

The 2000 Summer Olympics were held in Sydney, Australia, widely praised at the time as one of the best-organized Games in Olympic history. Aboriginal Australian sprinter Cathy Freeman lit the Olympic cauldron and went on to win gold in the 400 meters, a moment seen as a significant point in Australia's reckoning with its treatment of Indigenous peoples. North and South Korea marched together under a unified flag at the opening ceremony, though they continued to compete as separate teams.
