Yao Ming is a Chinese basketball executive and former professional player born September 12, 1980, who played for the Shanghai Sharks in China before being selected first overall in the 2002 NBA draft by the Houston Rockets, where he spent his entire nine-year NBA career. Standing seven feet six inches tall, he earned eight NBA All-Star selections and five All-NBA Team honors before persistent foot and ankle injuries forced his retirement in 2011, and he became widely credited as a bridge between Chinese and American basketball fans during the league's global expansion. In 2016 he became the first Chinese national inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and he later served as president of the Chinese Basketball Association from 2017 to 2024.
