Jan Ullrich is a German cyclist born December 2, 1973, in Rostock, then in East Germany, who turned professional with Team Telekom in 1995. In 1997 he became the first German to win the Tour de France, at age 23, and he also won the 1999 Vuelta a Espana, Olympic gold in the road race and silver in the time trial at the 2000 Sydney Games, and two UCI World Time Trial Championships, in 1999 and 2001, while finishing second at the Tour de France four times, in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2001, mostly behind Lance Armstrong. His career was later overshadowed by the Operacion Puerto doping investigation, which led to a two-year ban in 2012 and the removal of all results from May 2005 onward, and he admitted to blood doping in 2013 before retiring in February 2007.
