1960 Summer Olympics

Multi-Sport Games

The 1960 Summer Olympics were held in Rome, Italy, and were the first Games broadcast live on television across Europe, greatly expanding the global audience for the event. Ethiopian marathon runner Abebe Bikila won gold running barefoot through the streets of Rome, becoming the first sub-Saharan African Olympic champion, and American boxer Cassius Clay, later known as Muhammad Ali, won gold in the light heavyweight division. South Africa's apartheid-era team competed for what would be its last Olympics for decades, as the country was later excluded over its racial policies.
