Hans Grodotzki was an East German long-distance runner who competed mainly in track events. Born on 4 April 1936 in Preussisch Holland, East Prussia, he was a miner in Thuringia before he was talent spotted and began athletics training in 1954, later training at army sports centres in Potsdam and Berlin. Competing for the United Team of Germany at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, he won the silver medal in the 10,000 metres and a second silver medal in the 5,000 metres. He remains the only German to have won an Olympic medal in the 10,000 metres. He received the Patriotic Order of Merit in East Germany and the Rudolf Harbig Memorial Award in 1991.
