Wilfried Dietrich (1933 to 1992) was a West German heavyweight wrestler who competed at five Olympic Games between 1956 and 1972 and at six world championships. He often entered both the freestyle and the Greco-Roman events at the same Games, which the source describes as a feat unmatched by any other wrestler. He won five Olympic and five world championship medals, and became Olympic champion in 1960, world champion in 1961 and European champion in 1967. From 1955 to 1962 he won every one of his freestyle bouts. West Germany chose him as its Olympic flag bearer at its first appearance at the Summer Olympics in 1968, where he took a bronze medal. At his last Olympics in 1972 he failed to medal, yet produced the most spectacular victory of his career by throwing the 182 kilogram American Chris Taylor over his back in the Greco-Roman event. He was inducted into Germany's Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and the International Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2014.
