World Athletics began as the International Amateur Athletic Federation, founded by 27 representatives from 17 national federations meeting in Stockholm in 1912, with Sigfrid Edstrom as its first president. It took the name International Association of Athletics Federations in 2001 and rebranded as World Athletics in June 2019. It has 214 member federations across six area associations. In 1982 it began allowing athletes to receive prize money, ending strict amateurism. In 2022 it suspended the member federations of Russia and Belarus following the invasion of Ukraine, and it has faced sustained controversy over doping and over testosterone and transgender eligibility rules for the female category.
