Road running is the sport of running on a measured course over an established road, which sets it apart from track and field on a regular track and from cross country running over natural terrain. The Wikipedia lead places these events in the long-distance class of athletics terminology, with races typically ranging from 5 kilometers up to the 42.2 kilometers of the marathon, and says they may involve large numbers of runners or wheelchair entrants. Since the late 2010s some road events have also offered Nordic Walking as a separate competition along the same route. The four most common distances recognized by World Athletics are the 5K, the 10K, the half marathon and the marathon. The lead adds that running on the road is an alternative to trail, track or treadmill running, and that road running is one of several forms of road racing, alongside road bicycle racing and motor vehicle road racing.
