The 1988 Winter Olympics were held in Calgary, Canada, the first Winter Games to be extended to sixteen days to more closely match the format of the Summer Olympics. The Jamaican bobsled team made its Olympic debut at these Games despite the country having no snow or ice, a story that later inspired the film Cool Runnings. East Germany again finished atop the Winter Games medal table, continuing its run of strong results through the 1980s.
