Nils van der Poel

Nils van der Poel, who later adopted the surname Svensson, is a retired Swedish speed skater, born in 1996 in Trollhattan, who won Olympic gold medals in both the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, setting Olympic records in each distance. He was World Single Distances Champion in both events in 2021 and won the 2022 World Allround Championship, becoming the first Swede to do so in 49 years, and he holds the current world record in the 10,000 meters. Known for an unconventional training approach built on long, low-intensity aerobic work such as cycling, he retired from competition in March 2022 and published his training methods publicly to help develop the sport.
