Skiing as practical travel over snow is ancient in Scandinavia, attested by archaeological ski finds many centuries old, long predating any organized competition. Modern Nordic ski racing, cross-country and ski jumping, was first organized as competitive sport in Norway in the nineteenth century; the Holmenkollen Ski Festival in Oslo, inaugurated in 1892 before a crowd of 12,000, is among the earliest and most prestigious such competitions. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), governing both Nordic and Alpine disciplines, was founded in Chamonix, France, in 1924, succeeding the International Skiing Commission established in Oslo in 1910.
