The 1928 Winter Olympics were held in St. Moritz, Switzerland, the second edition of the Winter Games and the first formally designated as such from the outset. Unusually warm weather during the Games caused some outdoor events, including the 10,000 meter speed skating race, to be cancelled partway through because the ice had begun to melt. Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie, then 15 years old, won the first of her three consecutive Olympic titles.
