Marja-Liisa Kirvesniemi is a Finnish cross-country skier, born September 10, 1955, in Simpele, South Karelia. At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics she swept the individual women events, becoming the first Finn in 60 years to win three gold medals at one Games, including victory in the newly added 20 kilometre event over Soviet rival Raisa Smetanina. Across her career she won seven Olympic medals in total, three gold and four bronze, along with eight World Championship medals, three of them gold.
