Marc Girardelli

Winter Sports

Marc Girardelli, born on 18 July 1963 in Lustenau, Austria, is a former alpine ski racer who competed for Luxembourg and is one of the most decorated World Cup racers in the history of the sport. He excelled in all five alpine disciplines and won the overall World Cup title five times, in 1985, 1986, 1989, 1991 and 1993, a record that stood until Marcel Hirscher won a sixth title in 2017. He took 46 World Cup race victories and reached the podium 100 times. Because he kept Austrian citizenship while skiing for Luxembourg, he could not enter the 1980 or 1984 Winter Olympics. His first Olympics were at Calgary in 1988, and at Albertville in 1992 he won silver medals in super-G and giant slalom, the first Winter Olympic medals for the Grand Duchy. He won eleven World Championship medals, four of them gold, and retired from international competition in January 1997 at the age of 33.
