Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme

International Sport Federations

The International Motorcycling Federation, known by its French initials FIM, is the global governing and sanctioning body of motorcycle racing. It represents 123 national motorcycle federations, divided into six continental unions, and covers ten racing disciplines with more than ninety international championships. The FIM was born from the Fédération Internationale des Clubs Motocyclistes, founded in Paris on 21 December 1904, which was dissolved in 1906 and reborn in 1912 with its headquarters in England. It took the name Fédération Internationale Motocycliste in 1949, the year of the first Grand Prix road racing world championship race, moved its headquarters to Geneva in 1959 and to Mies in Switzerland in 1994, and took its present French name in 1998. The International Olympic Committee gave it provisional recognition in 1998 and full status in 2000.
