The National Football League, usually called the NFL, is the premier professional American football league in the United States. It has 32 teams split evenly between the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference, and each season runs from a preseason in August through an 18-week regular season to a single-elimination playoff that ends with the Super Bowl in early February. The league was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association and took its present name for the 1922 season. A playoff system began in 1933, and the Super Bowl has capped each season since the merger with the American Football League. The NFL is headquartered in New York City and is the wealthiest professional sports league in the world by revenue.
