Western States Endurance Run

Road Races and Marathons

The Western States Endurance Run, usually called Western States or the Western States 100, is a 100.2-mile (161 km) ultramarathon run on trails through California's Sierra Nevada each year on the last full weekend of June. It is administered by the nonprofit Western States Endurance Run Foundation and counts among the most competitive ultramarathons in the United States. The course was first tried on foot in 1972 by soldiers during the Tevis Cup horse ride, and the first official race took place in 1977 with sixteen runners, of whom three finished. In 1978 the run became independent of the Tevis Cup. Western States is one of the five 100-mile races that make up the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning and is a qualifier for the UTMB World Series.
