Annual mass-participation and elite road running races staged over public streets, led by the marathon, which covers 42.195 kilometres, and including shorter road distances such as the half marathon and the 10 kilometre race. Many of these events combine an elite field competing for prize money and course records with tens of thousands of recreational runners, and a number sit on international calendars of major city marathons. Belongs here: recurring city marathons and other road races on certified courses, such as the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Does not belong here: track and field events held in a stadium, which are disciplines of the sport itself, cycling road races and stage races, which belong under Grand Tour Stage Races, and triathlons, which are endurance sports.
