National Rugby League

Professional Leagues

The National Rugby League, sponsored as the NRL Telstra Premiership, is the professional rugby league competition of Australia and Oceania, contested today by sixteen teams based in Australia and one based in New Zealand. It was formed in 1998 as a joint partnership between the Australian Rugby League and the News Corporation-controlled Super League, following the Super League war of the 1990s, and it traces its origins to the New South Wales Rugby League, which formed in 1908. Control passed in 2012 to the Australian Rugby League Commission. Each season runs from March to October with 24 matches per team; the top eight teams enter a finals series, and the winner of the NRL Grand Final at Stadium Australia receives the Provan-Summons Trophy. The Wikipedia article reports it as the richest rugby league competition in the world by revenue.
