New South Wales Rugby League premiership

Professional Leagues

The New South Wales Rugby League premiership was the first rugby league football club competition established in Australia and a forerunner of today's National Rugby League. It was run by the New South Wales Rugby League, first named the New South Wales Rugby Football League, from 1908 until 1994, and served as the state's elite rugby league competition alongside Queensland's Brisbane Rugby League. The inaugural 1908 season had eight Sydney-based teams and one from Newcastle, with Cumberland joining after the first round, and South Sydney took the first premiership by beating Eastern Suburbs in the Final. Between 1912 and 1925 premiers were decided by first past the post, after which a finals system was introduced. The competition expanded beyond Sydney in 1982 with the Canberra Raiders and the Illawarra Steelers, and in 1995 it was played under the Australian Rugby League.
