Volleyball was invented in February 1895 by William G. Morgan, a twenty-five-year-old physical education director at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts, four years after and a few miles from James Naismith's invention of basketball. Morgan devised the game, first called Mintonette, as a less physically demanding alternative to basketball for his older members; the first Mintonette game was played in December 1895, and Dr. Alfred S. Halstead soon suggested the name volleyball, describing the object of volleying the ball over the net. The Federation Internationale de Volleyball, its international governing body, was founded in 1947.
