Professional Leagues

The Women's National Basketball Association, known as the WNBA, is a women's professional basketball league in North America. It currently has 15 teams, 14 in the United States and one in Canada, and is scheduled to grow to 18 teams by 2030. The league is headquartered in New York City. It was founded on April 24, 1996, as the women's counterpart to the National Basketball Association, and league play began in 1997. The regular season runs from May to September with each team playing 44 games, the top eight teams regardless of conference reach the playoffs, and the WNBA Finals close the season. The league also holds an All-Star Game in late July and an annual mid-season competition called the Commissioner's Cup, and it is an active member of USA Basketball, the body FIBA recognizes as the governing body for basketball in the United States.
