The 1924 Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France, originally staged as an International Winter Sports Week and only retroactively designated by the IOC as the first Winter Olympic Games. Sixteen nations sent roughly 250 athletes to compete in events across sports including figure skating, ice hockey, bobsled and various skiing and skating disciplines. The success of the event led the IOC to establish the Winter Olympics as a recurring companion to the Summer Games.
