The 2026 Winter Olympics were awarded to Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, making Italy the first country to host the Winter Games three times, after Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1956 and Turin in 2006. The Games are the first Winter Olympics organized around two principal host cities in different regions, Lombardy and Veneto, rather than a single host city and its surrounding venues. Cortina d'Ampezzo, the smaller of the two host areas, becomes the first location to host Winter Olympic events on two separate occasions three-quarters of a century apart.
