Shooting is a precision sport in which competitors fire rifles, pistols or shotguns at stationary or moving targets, scored by accuracy under strict safety and range regulations. It has been part of the modern Summer Olympics since the first Games in 1896 and is governed internationally by the International Shooting Sport Federation, which recognizes disciplines including rifle, pistol and shotgun events such as trap and skeet. Modern competitive shooting descends from military and hunting marksmanship traditions formalized into standardized sport in the 19th century.
