The 1896 Summer Olympics, held in Athens, Greece, were the first modern Olympic Games, reviving the ancient tradition through the efforts of Pierre de Coubertin and the newly founded International Olympic Committee. Fourteen nations sent roughly 241 male athletes to compete in 43 events across nine sports, all contested at the newly restored Panathenaic Stadium and a handful of other Athens venues. American athlete James Connolly, winner of the triple jump, is generally credited as the first Olympic champion of the modern era.
