National Olympic Committees

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) is the National Olympic Committee and umbrella sports confederation for South Africa, formed in 2004-2005 through the merger of several previously separate national sports bodies, and headquartered in Johannesburg. It selects and fields South Africa's Olympic team and oversees the country's Olympic sport federations, having guided South Africa's return to Olympic competition in 1992 after decades of international sporting isolation under apartheid-era boycotts.

FAQs

How did SASCOC come to exist and what did it take over?

It was formed in November 2004 by the member bodies of the earlier NOCSA and took over high performance sport functions in 2005.

SASCOC was formed on 27 November 2004, when the member bodies of the National Olympic Committee of South Africa (NOCSA) met at their annual general meeting and created it, at first as a Section 21 non-profit company. Its predecessor bodies were dissolved during 2005 and it took over their functions relating to high performance sport. Functions relating to mass participation in sport became the responsibility of Sport and Recreation South Africa.
