Monopoly is a multiplayer board game in which players move around a board buying, trading and developing properties, aiming to drive opponents into bankruptcy through rents and fees. The commercial game traces back to Elizabeth Magie's 1904 patent for The Landlord's Game, intended to demonstrate the economic effects of land monopolism, which was reworked and popularized by Charles Darrow, who sold it to Parker Brothers in 1935. Since then it has been published in many licensed city, franchise and country editions and is regarded as one of the best-selling and most widely recognized board games in the world.
