Judo was founded in 1882 by Jigoro Kano, who established the Kodokan school in Tokyo at the age of twenty-two, beginning with twelve tatami mats at the Eisho-ji temple. Kano drew on and refined older jujutsu traditions, removing dangerous techniques and emphasizing physical education and ethical development. Judo became the first Japanese martial art to gain wide international recognition, entering the Olympic programme at Tokyo in 1964. The International Judo Federation, its governing body, was created in London in 1951.
