Pan American Games

Multi-Sport Games

The Pan American Games, also called the Pan Am Games, are a continental multi-sport event for athletes from the nations of the Americas, first held in 1951 and staged every four years in the year before the Summer Olympics. Over 5,000 athletes compete in 36 sports and nearly 400 events, and the Games are the second-oldest continental games in the world. The Pan American Sports Organization chooses the host city and sets the sports programme. Since 2007 the host has also run the Parapan American Games for athletes with physical disabilities. The only Winter Pan American Games were held in 1990, and the first Junior Pan American Games took place in 2021. The latest edition was in Santiago in 2023, and Lima will host in 2027.
