Wayne Rainey is an American former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer who won the 500cc World Championship three times and the Daytona 200 once. He began in the A.M.A. Grand National Championship, won the 1983 national title for Kawasaki and the 1987 Superbike National Championship, then returned to Europe in 1988 with Team Roberts Yamaha in the premier 500cc class. That year he won his first world championship race at the British Grand Prix and shared the Suzuka 8 Hours win with teammate Kevin Magee. He was known for a smooth, calculating riding style and for an intense rivalry with his compatriot Kevin Schwantz that ran from 1987 to 1993.
