Football Codes

Wayne Francis Carey, born in 1971, is a former Australian rules footballer who played in the Australian Football League for the North Melbourne Football Club and then the Adelaide Football Club. Nicknamed The King, he captained North Melbourne to premierships in 1996 and 1999, won the club best and fairest four times and was selected seven times in the All-Australian team. North Melbourne named him centre half-forward and captain of its Team of the Century in 2001, and in 2008 a list published for the 150th anniversary of the sport ranked him the greatest player of all time. He left North Melbourne in 2002 after a scandal and later worked as a football commentator and columnist, with several of those roles ending in later years.
