Uwe Beyer

Uwe Beyer (14 April 1945 to 15 April 1993) was a West German hammer thrower. He competed at three Olympic Games, in 1964, 1968 and 1972, winning the bronze medal in 1964 for the United Team of Germany and finishing fourth in 1972 for West Germany. He won the European title in 1971, finished third in 1966 and fifth in 1974, and took eight consecutive German national titles from 1964 to 1971. He received the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt in 1964 and also starred as Siegfried in Die Nibelungen. He held a degree in physical education and ran a sports store in Mainz after retiring. In a 1977 interview on the ZDF programme Aktuelles Sportstudio he freely admitted using anabolic steroids throughout his career. He died of a heart attack while playing tennis in the Turkish resort of Belek.
