Nadia Nadim, born on 2 January 1988, is a professional footballer who plays as a striker. She was born in Afghanistan and has played for the Denmark national team. She is considered the most influential and greatest Afghan female footballer of all time, in particular because she has won league titles in two countries: the American league title in 2017 with the Portland Thorns and the French league title in 2020-21 with Paris Saint-Germain. She was named Danish Footballer of the Year in both 2016 and 2017. Her life story is unusual for a top-level footballer. She was born in Herat, and her father, an Afghan National Army general, was executed by the Taliban when she was nine. She fled with her mother and four sisters to Denmark as a refugee at eleven, began playing for a local club in Aalborg, and went on to play in Denmark, the United States, England and France.
