Mat Hoffman

Cycling Disciplines

Mat Hoffman, born in Edmond, Oklahoma, on 9 January 1972, is an American professional BMX rider regarded as one of the best vert ramp riders in the history of the sport, nicknamed The Condor. He began entering BMX freestyle competitions in Oklahoma in 1985 as an amateur and later landed the first 900 on 25 March 1989 in Kitchener, Ontario, ten years before Tony Hawk landed one at X Games V. He also built the business side of freestyle: he ran Hoffman BMX Bikes, and Hoffman Promotions grew into the Hoffman Sports Association, the organizing body for BMX freestyle events worldwide such as ESPN's X Games. At the X Games he earned the bronze medal in 2001 and, with the first no-handed 900, the silver medal in 2002.
