Kenny Roberts is an American former professional motorcycle racer and racing team owner, born in Modesto, California. In 1978 he became the first American to win a Grand Prix motorcycle racing world championship and went on to win three consecutive 500 cc world titles. He was a two-time winner of the A.M.A. Grand National Championship and one of only four riders to win the AMA Grand Slam. His dirt track based riding style changed the way Grand Prix machines were ridden, and his 1979 proposal for a rival championship broke the hold of the FIM and led to better safety and a more professional era. The FIM named him a Grand Prix Legend in 2000, and his son Kenny Roberts Jr. won the 2000 world title.
